Regality at Kilwinning Heritage!
Garnock Valley Ranger, Roger Griffith, a member of the NAC Ranger Service, gave a talk to Kilwinning Heritage group at the Erskine Hall on the 'Regality of Kilwinning - Echoes of the Past'.
A 'Regality' was an area of land over which the old abbots of Kilwinning Abbey ruled as if it were virtually an independent country. It was only in 1746 that these rights and priviliges were finally disposed of by act of parliament.
The speaker illustrated the talk with photographs of objects and places that date back to the days of the monks and also included place name evidence, old stories, etc that echo the significant history of the abbots ecclesiastical influence upon Kilwinning, Beith, Dunlop, Loudoun, etc.
Around thirty-five members of Kilwinning Heritage attended and a lively question and answer session followed with topics such as Ley lines, Ley tunnels, Justice Hills, etc being aired. With such a knowledgeable audience it was a two way affair.
In the summer the Ranger Service hopes to follow up the talk by leading a walk for the society through the historic landscape that is Eglinton Country Park.
