Kilwinning police students fundraise for Scottish Autism
Police students at James Watt College have raised £829 to Scottish Autism.
Students from the NC Police Studies at the Kilwinning Campus took part in various fundraising activities, as part of the unit Working with Others.
One group of students endured a 58 mile cycle round the Isle of Arran, raising £417 between them.
Graham Coultard, Scott Smith, Stuart Holland, Alex Bullock and Craig Donnan enjoyed the experience, despite a series of mishaps along the way.
Alex said: “It was a challenging experience, but very rewarding.
“There were a few funny moments along the way, such as Craig’s back wheel falling off and Stuart’s back breaks failing when going downhill, but we got through and it was a good team bonding experience and we had a laugh along the way.”
Some students held a sponsored ‘give-it-up’, giving up their x-box, wine, hair straighteners and talking for 24 hours.
A disco and raffle was also held in the Coach and Horses pub.
The class chose Scottish Autism as their preferred charity after a guest speaker provided an awareness workshop and spoke of the challenges faced by people with the condition.
Heather McArthur, fundraiser for Scottish Autism, said: “I am delighted at the amount of money raised by the students.
“They all worked incredibly hard and I was very impressed at how they mobilised themselves so quickly.
“One member of the Leadership Team at the college was so impressed with the fundraising efforts of the students that they made a personal donation to the charity.
“Scottish Autism works closely with Strathclyde Police, and it is important that our future police officers are aware of autism and why there may be an over-prevalence of people with autism in the criminal justice system.
“The students enjoyed the awareness session; they were a good group to work with and many of them were keen to get involved in fundraising for the charity.”
