Have you seen the story saying The Holy Grail could be in Kilwinning?

It has been reported that The Holy Grail could be right here in Kilwinning! Does anyone think there's anything to this story?

Historian AJ Morton believes the goblet used by Jesus at The Last Supper may have been brought to Kilwinning by the mysterious Knights Templar sect in the 14th Century. You can read more about it in the Scottish Sun.

I just heard him on BBC Radio Scotland, and he corrected the claims written in the Sun. He has apparently found a genuine connection between the Templars and Freemasons and had the sense to write a peer-reviewed doctoral thesis first. There was no mention of the Grail but Kilwinning and Irvine seem to be essential elements in his paper. I for one would like to see his book!

I heard an old story about Templars Wood and if you Google them you can see a cross cut into the planting of the trees, it is said that cross middle section is holy ground, don't know any more though.

Paul Jamieson says

I've been saying this for years. Kilwinning has a far larger place in history than we all believe. Connections with the Templars, the Grail, the Freemasons and history in general are there to see. What we need to do is make the world realise that we have lots of history on our doorstep and that it is there for all to enjoy. Tens of thousands of people go to places like Rosslyn Chapel every year, so why not Kilwinning too?

Jenny Barclay says

I don't think we should listen to the Scottish Sun. But yes, Kilwinning does have a lot to offer in history.

Andy B says

Agreed Paul and Jenny. Kilwinning has too much tradition to ignore it any longer. Irvine Times says: "AJ has hit out against some sources who have exaggerated his findings. He said he would "adore" Irvine and Kilwinning becoming historical tourist traps, but said he believed the Grail myth was "a fantasy"." I thought it was just a good publicity stunt. Turns out he has found something genuine. Amazing!!!!!

THE TEMPLARS WOOD TALKED ABOUT BY COLIN IS MOUNT HEREDOM AND IS THE BENSLIE WOODS , THE CROSS SHAPED HENGE IS DEPICTED ON THE 1760? GENERAL ROY MAP,

ROB ROBBO says

The Templar's wood is outside Kilwinning, all am saying is it's past Eglinton Castle, and is better know as HEREDOM, WOULD LOVE THE TIME TEAM TO DO A DIG IN IT, know someone who found a set of lower gold teeth while detecting in it.

Andy B says

Benslie wood is just an 18th century Dutch garden, thus the ornamental cross-shape. I googled it years ago, and found that someone had been calling it a Templar-Masonic site but offered no evidence whatsoever, just a weird web-site aligning Kilwinning and Benslie with the great pyramids. According to Mr. Morton, there's hundreds of real sites to choose from if you want Templars. According to the latest report, Benslie doesn't appear to be one of them. Surely it is better to learn about REAL sites? :) Andy B

Kilwinning has such a rich history and deserves better world wide recognition. I hope my new book helps it along the path of stardom it deserves! Read it on line at

Its all about Kilwinning, the Abbey, Freemasonry , the Knights Templar and more. Oh and  I mustn't forget about the Holy Grail.

S linton says

Unlike AJ Morton, I'm not shy about proclaiming that the Holy Grail is hidden at Kilwinning. To be more correct, it lies in an underground vault some 70 feet below the surface at the centre of Benslie Wood, 3.5 east of Kilwinning and yes it does look like a cup but its not! Your site is similar to the one I saw ages ago. I paid a lot of money for a limited edition copy of Morton's thesis, and there was no word about the Grail or Benslie. Just lots of academic endorsements. He has in my eye and in the eyes of many experts found an inescapable connection between the Templars and Masons and has done so without using magical elements like Grails and buried treasure. It's a very respectable work indeed. I've just purchased two new ones, and will update when I have the time. They look great.

I took a trip to Benslie at the weekend. Though Mr. Morton never mentions the estate in his thesis, or in the lists of Templar lands, I was surprised to see a rather old, but well crafted, set of initials and a surname in a pair of trees within the estate policies (the estate's woodland). These were clearly carved many many years ago judging by the amount of growth and healing around the letters.

I can't believe what it said... :)

Andy B says

Does nobody want to know what it said?? :D

Terry Burns says

Yes, I would like to know what it said.

I'd also like to get a copy, if anyone has one.

Have your say...
