Archeology project breaks new ground as Kilwinning dig gets under way
18 AugustThe big dig in Kilwinning is about to get under way, with everyone who is to dig up the grounds of Kilwinning's ancient Abbey going through a training course on how to be an archaeologist this week.
Fifty volunteers have signed up to help with the excavation, and they will be taken to Rathmell Archaeology in Kilwinning to see the laboratory and learn some basic digging techniques on Wednesday 18th and Thursday 19th August.
And on Wednesday, August 18th, Depute Lord Lieutenant Erica Lockhart will cut the first piece of turf at the Abbey.
This first season will run from Wednesday, August 18th until Saturday, 18th September, from Wednesday until Saturdays each week.
During the work the Abbey Tower Heritage Centre will be open for longer hours, staffed by both members of the Kilwinning and District Preservation Society and volunteers from the project.
Opening hours for Wednesday to Saturday will be from 10.30am to 4pm and on Sundays from 1pm to 3pm.
