The old Village of Dalgarven
The old village of Dalgarven, north of Kilwiining, still exists, but only as a shadow of its former self thanks to the widening of the main road to Dalry.
In 1881 some two hundred people lived in Dalgarven village, the mill being at its heart, with a Sunday school, smithy, joiner's shop and Dalgarven House. Most of the women of the village were weavers, dressmakers, farm or domestic servants and the men were stone masons, joiners, farm labourers, platelayers, railway surfacemen, etc. Monkcastle House is at one end of the village and Smithstone House at the other.
As stated, the coming of the new road resulted in the demolition of most the village apart from the smithy and a cottage row. The mill however still exists as a museum, cafe and antique shop, whilst Dalgarven House is now a hotel.
A pre-reformation chapel is said to have existed in the vicinity and the old Dalgarven yew tree may be indicative of this.
