Kilwinning The Town I've Loved so well

by Margaret Biagi

Just an old market town in the county of Ayr,

Is the town that I have loved so well,

For t'was there I was born, among hearts as gold as corn,

Where the ones that I dearly love dwell,

There's the Mother Lodge, and the Abbey Church,

I still can hear the ringing of the bell,

Where the Monks would pray, placed a cross beside the brae,

In the town I've loved so well.

On either bank of the Garnock bridge,

Stood the Gasworks and the Busby spinning Mill,

Lizzie Greig sold many wares, Big Tam Young the latest flares,

The smiddy and the Higher Grade schule.

Arthur Matthews the barber, Logans bakery,

McCrories, and Geordie Pooles wee shop,

He sold tobacco for your smokes, lots of sweeties in wee pokes,

In the town I have loved so well.

Jean McQueen's Pawnshop, Maggie Wilsons pub,

The Buttercup dairy, Cornelius for fruit,

Mintos for carbide, medicines fae Moirs,

While Jimmy Cockburn swept your lum o' soot,

Greater Abbey park, where the Buffs still play,

Mrs Craig could cut and perm your hair,

Jimmy Ramages for coal, John Cowies mission for you soul,

In the town I've loved so well.

Hugh McConnels cafe', Mrs Paradys',

Woodside the butchers for your meat,

Andrew Wales the clothier, McCain for potty Heid,

Mrs Hannah's shoes for your feet,

The mem'ries of childhood seem so fair,

As I recall the happy days gone by,

I shall brighten memories flame, and remember every name,

In the town I've loved so well.

Great, great poem but sadly if written today there would hardly be enough to fill one verse. Roll on the NEW TOWN CENTRE.

margaret o'hare says

Nice poem!! Who is it written by???

Site Admin says

The poem was submitted by Ruby Legg. She doesn't know who wrote it, she got it from her sister in law. it would be great if anyone could help us find out who the poet is!

Ruby Legg says

I phoned my sister in law, and she found out it was Margaret Biagi who wrote this poem. Some may know her as Margaret Moore (her maiden name), who was married to Bobby Poole, and now married to Mr Biagi. They are living at the Dirrens. She has made Calendars with photos of old Kilwinning, as well as other things.
Hope this helps.
Ruby

Margaret Biagi says

Hi Folks, Margaret Biagi here.
Just to say I live in Ladyford Avenue, and am a widow.
Regards the calendars, the profits from these are given to charity, and 2009 profits are going to MOTOR NEURONE DISEASE. You can order them in NEXT DOOR cafe, or BURNS FOOTCARE. Thanks to all for buying them in previous years.
Margaret (Muir) Biagi.

George Poole says

Mrs Biagi now lives in Ladyford Avenue, her maiden name is Muir and the poem wasn't written all that long ago. She's written hundreds of poems and does indeed make her own calendars with pictures of old Kilwinning among many others.

PETER WATSON says

What a wonderful poet Margaret Biagi is, so full of pride for her home town of Kilwinning and gives freely to Motor Neurone Disease charity with donations from her beautiful calendar.

Ruby Legg says

Hello Again, so glad to see Margaret's answer, as this corects my comment who wrote the poem. I see I got the name wrong. It was Muir and now living at Ladyford Avenue. So sorry to hear she is now a widow as well. Sorry folks but glad all is OK now.

Margaret Biagi says

Ruby Legg, where are you? Come in to NEXT DOOR cafe and introduce yourself. Bring your sister-in-law too! M.Biagi.

Linda Mills says

What a lovely poem that has come from the heart of the poet, my dear friend Margaret, whose heart and soul belongs to Kilwinning. Thanks Margeret for all the charity work you do and especially picking Motor Nureon for the charity that will benefit from your calendars. Linda Mills

Ruby Legg says

Thank you Margaret, this is Ruby Legg. I haven't been well lately and not been on here much, so just saw your message. When I feel better I will come to NEXT DOOR Cafe and meet you with my sister in law. I will add here when I'll go. I'll need to depend on my hubby to take me as well. Looking forward to meeting you.

Ruby Legg says

This is Ruby Legg. In answer to Margarets invite, I hope to get to the NEXT DOOR Cafe soon. Hope to meet you there.

Laura Petersen says

Really nice poem! I have a question tho'. There is a line in the poem which reads:

Woodside the butchers for your meat,

Does anyone know anything about this butcher? Given name?

The reason I am asking is my Woodside family came from Kilwinning. I believe my Robert Woodside to be the son of Robert Woodside and Margaret Paton. Robert Woodside (married to M. Paton), I think (and I hope) is the son of Hugh Woodside and Isabella Lusk.

Also can anyone tell me if there are any families living there with the Surname of Woodside or Woodsides? Thank you so much!!!!!

Laura (Woodside) Petersen/p

Margaret Biagi says

To Laura Petersen, Woodside the butcher was owned by two brothers, Robert and John, better known as Bobby and Johnny. There were more siblings, but I can't remember their names. Hope this helps you. M. Biagi.

Laura Petersen says

Thank you Margaret for your reply.

Does anyone know if there are still Woodsides living in the area? I am hoping to touch base with them to see if they are related to me.

I believe that my Robert Woodside was the grandson of Hugh and Isabella Lusk. Robert and Margaret (Paton) Woodside were possibly his parents. Hughs children were: Robert, James, Margaret, Ann, Mary, Archibald.

Robert and Margaret children were: James, Helen, Robert, John, Thomas and Margrat. Robert, son of Hugh, was a weaver.

My Robert was born the 7th day of July, 1802.

Robert, son of Hugh, was born 07.05.1764 and wed Margaret on 18.03.1799 in Kilwinning.

I think that the Bobby and John you speak of were Archibald (son of Hugh) grandsons. I found reference of Archibald (son of Archibald) who was a public accountant in Glasgow, which told of brothers James and John being butchers in Dalry in Ayrshire.

Thank you for your kind assistance!

Gratefully Laura (Woodside) Petersen

To Margaret Biagi
What a wonderful poem about your memories of Kilwinning. I wish I knew more.

My great grandmother Catherine (McCartney) Stewart was born in Kilwinning and died there in 1902.

This is a picture of her and Stewart grandchildren in her later years. I have often wondered what her day was like, and if she was happy.

Thanks for sharing.

Hi folks, great poem, well done you Margaret. I'm Alan Watson (one of two in my class) originally from Kilwinning (Blacklands, will anyone speak to me again?) Great memories of Blacklands Primary, when it was at the bottom of Pollock Crescent. Accross from the Institute. Think it's houses now! Now based in Edinburgh running Wedding Photos Edinburgh - take a look at my web site, just google the name.
Just wondering how life in Kilwinning will have changed since I left so many years ago, anyway, all the best from a cold and windy Edinburgh.

Alan

Helen Livingstone says

Enjoyd the poem. Came across it when i was searching for information on my great-grandparents. They were Thomas and Maggie Begley (nee Stewart). As far as I know they were connected with the Starr Inn? If you have any knowledge of this, could you let me know, I would love to hear anything! My email is helenhame@blueyonder.co.uk.

This song was written by Phil Coulter from Derry. Mrs Biagi has taken the ethos of the song and put some nice words to it (although I'm not sure if Phil would like the bit about the Mother Lodge :-) ). I have also re-written my own lyrics about the plight of South Ayrshire and the mess the council have made of my home town of Ayr! If you go to the Ayrshire Post page you can see my version there. I plan to record the song and any monies made will go to the Ayrshire Hospice.

Margaret Biagi says

Hi Folks, I first heard the song on CD by the late Josef Locke, after his demise. I was moved to tears by it, as he obviously felt about Derry as I do about Kilwinning. That's why I wrote the poem to match the melody. Unfortunately, I don't have as good a set of pipes as he did. Margaret Biagi.

brian mckinlay says

I haven't heard that version but as you say, the song is so emotive! That is why I have used it to kick off my campaign to bring down South Ayrshire Council.

All the best and look out for my campaign in the press!

Cheers, Brian.

History doesn't have to be in black & white

Your memory of a local character or a school photo from the last ten years can be just as interesting as wars and Victorians.
