A (very) brief history of Kilwinning

Here are just a few key points in the development of Kilwinning, town of firsts:

Early 8th Century - St Winin/Winning arrives and establishes a church that will later become the site of the Abbey.
12th Century - Building of Kilwinning Abbey begins leading to the arrival of Tyronensian Benedictines and subsequent annual earnings of approximately 20,000 pounds sterling.
12th Century - Mother Kilwinning, the First Lodge of Scotland is built around 1140.
1439 - Garnock Bridge is constructed linking Kilwinning with Segdoune.
1483 - First Papingo shoot and start of the Ancient Society of Kilwinning Archers, said to be the oldest archery group in the UK and possibly the world.
16th Century - Reformation leads to downfall of the Abbey.
18th Century - Eglinton Castle built, foundation laid in 1797.
1839 - Eglinton Tournament takes place bringing thousands of visitors to the area despite the heavy rain.
1851 - Kilwinning Abbey Tower rebuilt.
2000 - James Watt College completed.

Now it's your turn.

Above are just a few important dates - there's far more to the heritage of the town. There's a lot of interest in local history, and lots and lots of local knowledge. And here's your chance to tell everyone about it.
If you have an interest in the history of Kilwinning - either in general or in specific points - then you can post it here. There must be many, many pictures of the village from throughout the 20th century - why not post them here, and ask other people what they remember?

s1kilwinning is your site, so be one of the first to help build it!

Thanks James Burns, here' s a link to The Mother Lodge of Scotland, Mother Kilwinning No.0.

A weblink to the Mother Lodge website would be handy for those interested in finding more about Freemasonry in Scotland.

James Miller says

The rebuilding of the Abbey Tower was 1816 and not 1851 as stated above. J.S.Miller

Hugh Herschell says

As a Kilwinning born guy and former Buffs footballer I would love to see Abbey Park.................I live in South Africa with a strong Kilwinning accent from 47 years ago.

Looking to trace family history - my great-grandparents were Thomas & Maggie Begley (nee Stewart), as far as I know they were connected with the 'Star Inn' pub! If anybody has any information I would be grateful to hear from you.

PRYDE says

Cranberry Moss Community Centre has a Family History Group on Wednesdays from 7-9 pm.

They are always happy to help.

JAMES BURNS says

With our family history in Kilwinning going back to at least 1867 when my great great grandfather started CHARLES BURNS AND SONS SHOE SHOP, I have been collecting data on our family tree. But does anyone have any old photos of the shoe shop in the Main Street as most of the old family photos were burnt way back in the 70's. We only have a couple in hand of my great grandpa but it would be really appreciated if there were some photos out there in kilwinkie land to help me with my quest.
Thank you.

I am lookiing for information about the Sourlie Old Houses. Anyone heard of them? Were they near Kilwinning?

Robert Mason says

Why is Eglinton castle area now classed as being in Irvine, I have contacted NAC planning and they seem to think it's in Irvine too, the visitors centre has a KA12 postcode! So could some Kilwinning folk tell me for sure, is Eglinton castle in Kilwinning or not (or do NAC just want it in Irvine ;-) ).

Archie McMillan says

Typical Irvine, if they can't get it they will take it. Eggie park is in Kilwinning, at least for the time being, noooo it's staying in Kilwinning, they can have the mall{argh} we will keap Eggie.

Ann Robertson says

Some of us from the Cranberry Moss genealogy class visited the records office and we had a go at researching the Family for Kelly and Laura at Park Circus in Glasgow yesterday.

We did quite well, but does anyone know if we still have anyone from the Woodside family living in Kilwinning today?

Harvie Tennant says

Eglinton Castle was always in the burgh of Kilwinning, when the earls of Eglinton were in residence, the rates were collected by Kilwinning, not Irvine!!

Laura Petersen says

A big hearty THANKS! to Ann Robertson and the Cranberry Moss Genealogy Class for all their assistance in researching our Woodside family at Park Circus! It is greatly appreciated and we are quite excited that we, thanks to them, are pretty sure we are back on the right track!!!! Thanks again! Laura

Robert Mason says

Thanks Archie and Harvie for the info re Eglinton castle

Bill MacPhail says

Interesting site. My grandfather William McPhail was initiated into Mother Kilwinning around the time of the First World War. He was Manager at Barton Holme Pit at one time and a prominent mason in Ayrshire. His great grandson Craig is a Past Master and a member of the Grand Lodge Royal Arch here in Ontario Canada. Bro. Having lived on Redstone Ave for many years before immigrating to Stevenston, I was asked if I knew of a scrapyard up the five roads. I can remember it but don't know who owned it. Can anyone help?

iain norwood says

The scrap yard was on Bannoch Road if that helps anyone. I'm stumped for an answer, I have asked a few people from Kilwinning but they can't help either. The elder folks might know, please help lol!

william sneddon says

The scrappy on the Bannoch road at the old piggery and if I remember right it was a guy called Kenny Parry or Parish who had it.

colin young says

I am looking for information on the three mounts which are behind the Woodwynd housing estate on the banks of the Garnock. It's on a map as being Druid's sleep. But what was it?

iain norwood says

Thanks a lot for the info William on the scrappy, I will pass it on many thanks.

catherine roberts says

Keny Parish as far as I know still owns the scrappy there as he was a good friend of my family. Eglinton Castle and its grounds are in Kilwinning, there is also a tunnel underground leading to the Abby church tower. I hope this has been of some help.

I also remember the Burns shoe shop very well as I always got my shoes from there from the 60's to the late 70's. Sorry I don't have any photo's but have fond memories going for my new school shoes.

LaDonna Webb says

5 of us coming for a visit to Kilwinning in September looking for family roots. Suggestions where to stay?

LaDonna Webb

JIM COCHRANE says

For Colin Young .....If you go into www.Ayrshireroots.com you will find detailed information about the Three Mounts.

iain norwood says

To LaDonna Webb: The only place I can think of is the Gales Lodge, it's in Irvine. It's ok if you've got a car, the bus does run through from Ayr every so often but a car would be best. Its website is www.galeslodge.com.

iain norwood says

Catherine the scrappy is long gone, just waste ground now. Funny that we were talking about it the other day and I was up that way on Tuesday the 17th March with my work. Are u from Kilwinning? I stayed there for 22 years.

Anne Denniston says

LaDonna Webb: try High Smithstone farm (http://www.bedandbreakfastayrshire.com/) if you have a car. It has beautiful views across Ayrshire.

JIM COCHRANE says

To La Donna Webb: Ardeer Farm Steading B&B, a mile or so outside Kilwinning is a very popular place. Highly recommended, and in a very handy location for nearby towns such as Saltcoats, Kilwinning and Irvine. Motorway links also close by for Ayr, Kilmarnock and Glasgow.

Sandra Tennant says

Looking for any descendants of David Tennant born County Down Ireland 1880, settled in Kilwinning in late 1890's, married Catherine Freckleton in 1907 and had several children, including Tom and Dave who emigrated to Ontario Canada. Other known children are Sarah who married James Montgomery Boyd in 1930, and Joseph who married Marion Seaman in 1947. David and Catherine died in Kilwinning. David was the brother of my late husband's father Thomas Tennant. Would love to correspond with anyone who knows this family.

Janice scaife says

The scrap yard belonged to Gordon Parry? Which as far as I know the piggery was across the road? Gordon's wife & daughter still live in Kilwinning.

catherine roberts says

Iain
Yes I grew up in the Blacklands, we moved to Hawthorn court in the Blacklands. We moved there from Blacklands Avenue in the 70s, my Aunt Jean lived in the Corsehill so I spent a lot of time there as well I got married in the Abbey church in 79. I try to get back as much as possible as there is no place like it and I have lived in a few areas abroad and in England. If it was not that my grown up children live here I would move back tomorrow. Where abouts did you live on Redstone Avenue as my aunt lived there.

Harvie Tennant says

Sandra: My late "papa" was Robert Tennant who passed away in 1988, I am sure his father was the David Tennant that you have mentioned, my father is also called David, his brother Jim and sister Marie all still live in Kilwinning, I will post a pic of my papa taken roughly 40 odd years ago when they lived at 27 Waterside Road, Woodwynd.

Alex Taggart says

What year was Kilwinning main street open for pedestrians only. I think it was between 1979 & 1983?

Sandra Tennant says

For Harvie Tennant: I've been away for a couple of months at the cottage with no computer or internet. I'm so sorry I did not respond to your post sooner. I just noticed it today!
I'm so glad to hear from you. I'm sure my husband Tom met your great-grandfather David and your grandfather Robert when he was stationed in Ayrshire for training in WW2 as he knew there were two sons but he couldn't remember their names. Tom's brother Jim played for the National Soccer team in Scotland in his younger years (for the Kilwinning team?).
Is there any way we could exchange e-mail or postal addresses so we could correspond more privately off this site? I would love to learn more about David Tennant Sr and his children, and in particular your family lines.
Thanks for your response, the info provided and the photo. I love to hear from "distant" cousins!
Sandra Tennant

David Tennant says

For Harvie Tennant and Sandra Tennant.

I and my sister Ina still live in Ayrshire.

I've married a man with Templeton ancestors from the Kilwinning area, c. 1780. The earliest researched was William Templeton and wife, they had six out of eight of their children in Kilwinning, living @ Windyhall Farm, which is still there. The Templeton's continued to live at Windyhall Farm for a few generations and also on farms nearby. A descendent of William Templeton lived @ Seven Acres Farm at the turn of the century, 19th to 20th. I am seeking anyone that may shed more light on this family, especially the different branches and where they came from prior to Kilwinning. email: asilnirak@aol.com

Roger Griffith says

Druid's Grove Mounds - they were thought by some to be moot hills or Beltane linked mounds. It is generally accepted that they are natural features created by erosion caused by two small burns. They are upriver from the old railway viaduct - now the cycle path. If you type 'Druids Kilwinning' into Wikimedia (not Wikipedia) you will see three of my photographs of the site.

Roger Griffith says

The Sourlie Oldhouses - anything to do with the old miners rows at the Sourlie Colliery on the edge of the Eglinton Country Park near the Draught Burn?
