Promoting Kilwinning
Promoting Kilwinning is now working towards the Christmas light switch on which will take place on Thursday 25th November.
Anyone who feels they can help or wants to be involved is asked to contact Joe Broussard on 552284.
PROMOTING KILWINNING
KILWINNING CLEAN AND BEAUTIFUL CAMPAIGN
AUTUMN CLEAN UP- Oct 23th to Nov 1st.
AGM
The AGM of Promoting kilwinning was held in July.
The Chairs Report read
PROMOTING KILWINNING
ANNUAL REPORT OF ACTIVITIES
Firstly, before I start I would like to thank the Committee Members for the support which they have given me during the past year. I had some personal issues to deal with and wasn't able to give the time I would have liked to the organisation, but I knew that the organisation was left in very capable hands.
Promoting Kilwinning has had a very successful year. The organisation was involved in even more events this year than from the previous year.
Christmas Lights 2008
In November 2008 we managed a very successful Christmas Lights switch on. Kilwinning's own Mikey Hughes of Big Brother fame pulled a great crowd and the weather was perfect. Thanks to Donald Reid for organising this event at short notice.
Clean and Beautiful Campaign
The Clean and Beautiful Campaign held a week long spring clean up in April 2009 as part of a National Campaign. The event attracted a much bigger response than last year although the main event in Almswall Park was poorly supported.
The adopt a spot list is getting longer and longer and becoming more popular with Kilwinning residents. NAC has produced a map for us to display our adopted spots. Thanks to Joe Broussard for organising the Spring clean up and monitoring the adopt a spot scheme.
The station in bloom project had another successful year and again the station is looking blooming marvellous.
This year we hope to extend these clean up activities by applying for grants to fund major efforts to remove some of the big litter eyesores around the town. Next big event - another Autumn clean up in 2009.
Fairtrade
We had another successful Fairtrade Fortnight in March 2009. Joe Broussard advises that it is hoped that we can apply for Fairtrade town status in Autumn of this year.
Parklive and Carnival 2009
The first stage of the Kilwinning An' A' That Carnival took place over the weekend of May 30th and 31st.
On Saturday the Segdoune Royal Parade made its way to Eglinton Park from the Main Street led by Irvine and District Pipe Band and the Open Top bus.
Holly Robinson was crowned the 40th Segdoune Royal by Betty Harvie. The Royal party then enjoyed their afternoon at Parklive.
The Parklive Segdoune Fun Run took place on Sunday morning. Exceptional temperatures caused a few problems, but the majority who took part seemed to enjoy the run. We will be aiming to improve on the run next year. The Run next year will be on Sunday, 30th May 2010 which will again form part of Parklive event.
The second stage of the carnival was held at KA Campus on Saturday, 27th and Sunday, 28th June. This part of the event suffered a low take-up rate although all feedback of those in attendance was very positive. The acts were all of a good standard and there were no negative comments on the high standards adopted for the entertainers.
The assistance of North Ayrshire Council and KA Campus were all very much appreciated.
Thanks also to Donald Reid for organising these events and to the volunteers who turned up and offered their assistance.
Town Regeneration and Main Street Re-surfacing
The plans to re-surface the Main Street and regenerate the town centre are well underway. Irvine Bay is actively promoting, to visitors and residents alike that the town centre is open for business as usual.
Websites and Newsletter
The S1Kilwinning.com website is becoming very popular and well used by Kilwinning residents.
To compliment the website we have produced 2 Newsletters - Winter 2008 and Summer 2009.
Please support both the website by supplying news, opinions, comments, your own club/organisation news and events.
Conclusion
So you can see that Promoting Kilwinning is going from strength to strength and working hard. Thanks to the entire Committee for doing a great job. Although some of the Committee have decided to step down this year and thanks should go to Eoin Hunter
for the contribution they have made to the success of Promoting Kilwinning.
Finally, the only other thing I would comment on is that the Committee is made up mainly of residents from the town and I think that the organisation will have to look at how we can attract traders and representatives from other groups and committees to become involved in the organisation. After all, Promoting Kilwinning was set up with the aim of promoting the town and everyone who has an interest in the town should or needs be involved. I think that if we all start working together more can be achieved for the community of Kilwinning.

Matters Arising. AC had secured a supply of cotton shoppers to assist in the reduction of plastic carrier bags in the area. The group asked AC to work with secretary to bring the project forward possibly to be launched at the Lights switch on and released via the Library as well, publicity to be arranged via newsletter also.
The issue of moving the planters have been overtaken with proposals to remove all planters from Main Street.
Donald Reid said further to the report at the last meeting no further discussions had taken place over street proposals.
A copy of the comments sent to Roads on the Traffic Order proposed was also noted.
Secretarial
Letters received re festival forum, Events Programme, Failure to be funded by Smith Kline Beecham, Celtic FC, NAC licensing re raffle licence and further correspondence on the Christmas lighting.
Emails of various types as were listed.
The issue of the Christmas lights was an interesting one with new procedures and rules introduced this year. The cost of electricity will be met from PK funds in all future years, An electric supplier contract was being worked on currently, Provision will need to be made to cover this additional costing.
It was revealed at the URC meeting that they expect there to be a Switch on in 2009. The URC are looking to establish new lighting structures as part of the town centre works roads had advised DR.
The dates for next years events had been set to fit in with the events programme deadlines.
Family Fun Run 24th May
Carnival 29,30, 31st May
Light Switch on Thursday 26th November.
Treasurers report
£289 raised at medium ship night, the monthly statement was not in yet but the costs approved for the banners had been paid.
Thanks offered to Jan, Nethermains and John Edgar for there efforts over the medium ship night.
The Raffle tickets continue to need to be pushed up till the draw at close of Business on 27/11/09
The next main fundraiser would be based on the tribute night planned for the 29th.May.
Given that we are now faced with the Electric costs and are now expected to make a switch on happen in 2009 careful planning must be shown.
PK to lay a wreath on Remembrance Sunday, all members welcome to attend. Cost of Wreath £21.30 approved.
Sub Committee
Carnival.
Donald Advised that plans still centred on a location being secured, it was also revealed that town centre works are now to be phased over two years which would make the project all the more important and indeed from PK viewpoint would have to be substantiated for both, so the budget of £8500 might well need to reviewed especially given the Christmas Lights switch on news.
Christmas
Jacqui opened by advising there had been communication difficulties and that plans had not been developed.
An Action plan was promoted with
DR to arrange Stewards, Public Liability Insurance, First Aid Cover, Lorry, Stage, DJ, Barriers and the Fairground which was already in hand. Donald had already facilitated several site visits re the lights this year and were going up by independent contractor (indeed the lights were going up as we met). The Council would be providing a tree and DR had advised NAC that PK had would buy lights for it.
JB to contact Police
DR hopes that a shop unit will be available for our use at the Light switch on similar to the Carnival.
Acts to be appealed for via local press. DR to arrange appeal, and secretary to be asked to provide posters.
AOCB
Members were encouraged to attend the meeting on Wednesday 26th November being arranged by the URC for the bigger Kilwinning Picture on the proposals for Kilwinning.
The meeting the week prior arranged solely on the Main Street had been reasonably well attended and was well received by those in attendance. There had still at this meeting been opinions sought on finishes. The contract tender was out for expressions of interest. It was envisaged that there would be a local facilitator in place prior to works starting and throughout the contract to ensure even communication.
DR advised that the Carnival Committee would hope to meet during November.
Newsletter end of October 2008
Welcome
A very warm welcome to you all to this, a new venture to Promoting Kilwinning. While the new www.s1kilwinning.com website has given the community a lift, we realise that there might just still be people out there who are not connected to the big wide world of the web, (Kilwinning Library can help you go surfing). This feeble attempt is to try and tell you a little of what Promoting Kilwinning is about and the aims and aspirations of the Group.
Christmas 2008
This year the lights switch on is Thursday 27th November at 6.30pm or thereabouts. Mikey Hughes will be our star to switch on the lights.
Many of you will have seen that Mikey has been rather busy since his departure from Big Brother but has refused all other Christmas Light switch on events, so important he holds the duty of performing the Kilwinning switch on.
So do come along and join in the fun. Music on stage 5.30pm to 8.30pm. The fairground will also be in town. Any act or group who would like to be part of the event contact Joe Broussard 552284 or Jacqui Browne 558634.
Clean and Beautiful
Joe Broussard organises two annual clean ups of public areas. This autumn clean up will be based around the school holiday long weekend. Any group who would like to adopt a spot or tidy an area is asked to contact Joe so that it can be included in his arrangements and ensure all rubbish collected is disposed of correctly. The event also works to raise awareness of the effects of dog fouling and littering. Kilwinning Academy pupils have in the past received support and took ownership of clean ups.
Joe's Email is PK@broussard.co.uk
Fair Trade
Somerfield stocks a good supply of fair trade products. Remember if you are out and your cup of tea is not fair trade, ask why not.
Christmas Lights
This year PK will again buy new tree lights for the Main Square Tree. This year we are hopeful vandals will not be the winners. After much campaigning and gnashing of teeth, improvements have been made to the CCTV camera in the area. This year also for the first time we will need to fund the electricity used by the features above the street. All of the features will be going on holiday come January for a major overhaul. Discussions will follow with the URC as the works proposed to improve the town centre which could bring major benefits and more flexibility in respects of Christmas lighting. With the current financial difficulties, the donating of even a few pennies all helps improve the town centre.
PK very much hope that we can look forward to a bright Christmas in 2010 once all the town centre works are complete. The works will run throughout 20009 till just before the Christmas event, then works will stop till January and run through 2010 when any new features will be introduced. Liz in Burns Footcare is thanked for her efforts in looking after the collecting cans in the shops.
Thank you Kilwinning for your support.
Kilwinning Royal Party
Your Royal Party lead by Gemma Stevens have had a busy summer attending everything from a duck race to a flower show. In November the Royals will lay a wreath to represent Promoting Kilwinning on Remembrance Sunday, play an active part in the Christmas light switch on and the Clean and Beautiful campaign.
Raffle
PK are running a raffle to help with the cost of the Christmas lights and the Carnival. Tickets are only 50p each and some very good prizes include return rail travel in Scotland, £100 cash, spirits, meal vouchers, day at the races and a bottle of Commons whiskey signed by the PM.
The Draw is at the Christmas Light switch on, so don't delay. Available from Intrigue, Burns Footcare, Kandy Bar and Nethermains Community Centre to name a few. You can also post a cheque to us at Promoting Kilwinning, Eglinton House, Eglinton, Kilwinning. Jan is the lady who has pulled this together and can assist if you would like to help sell tickets.
Carnival 2009
The carnival will be staged out with the Main Street due to essential and much awaited town centre works. The dates will be 29th to 31st May for the main event. All enquiries for stalls and to appear on the open stage contact Donald Reid 01294 472194, email donhere@hotmail.co.uk or Jan Bell 554771. The events committee is always looking for new members with fresh ideas, Donald Reid would very much like to stand down from the role he takes on as organiser after the event in 2009.
The event in May will start of with a Family Fun Run in Eglinton and a tribute night which will be a fundraiser on the Friday. Do you remember Main Street 25 years ago?
Work was well under way 25 years ago to get the major works done of paving the Main Street and converting it to a traffic free place for the benefit of pedestrians.
There was a major push on so that the works could be completed in time for Mr Lou Grant to officially open the new look street in time for the busy Christmas shopping period. This ceremony was held on December 3rd during the day. The Event was said to be very festive. Some buildings were also revamped as part of the major project.
Main Street Proposals for Traffic
North Ayrshire Council proposes to consider the introduction of a traffic regulation order for the provision of a Pedestrian Zone within Main Street, Kilwinning.
Full details of these proposals, which form the proposed, THE NORTH AYRSHIRE COUNCIL (MAIN STREET, KILWINNING) (PEDESTRIAN ZONE) ORDER 2008, together with a plan and a statement of reasons for proposing to make this traffic regulation order, are available for inspection during normal office hours Monday to Friday inclusive at the offices of:
Head of Infrastructure and Design Services (Roads), Perceton House, Irvine, or Legal and Protective Services, Cunninghame House, Irvine.
Any person wishing to object to these proposals should send details of the grounds for objection in writing to the Head of Infrastructure and Design Services, Perceton House, Irvine by 21st November 2008.
The Bigger Picture for Kilwinning
There is a public meeting on 26 November at 6.30pm, Erskine Hall. The URC will present the plans to anyone who wants to come along.
The following is an extract from the new Baywatch newsletter: The towns' plans are the culmination of planning and consultation work with the communities of Irvine Bay over the last year. The plans will help shape the development of each of the town centres with the hope of attracting new business and employment into the area. The particular needs of each town are being tackled in order to bring vitality back into the town centres and shopping streets. The plans will also make the most of harbours, beaches, historic buildings and other local resources.
To date hundreds of people have been involved in the consultation process. We have even needed to extend the period of consultation to make sure that everyone with a stake in delivering the future of Irvine Bay is fully involved. We've been working hard to crystallise the many ideas that have been put forward and the plans are taking shape.
Information events, Come along and see the plans and comment on the spot! The date is 26th November 2008 6.30pm - 8.30pm Erskine Hall, Kilwinning, a display of the proposals will be on show from 24th November - 5th December 2008 in the library.
PK Editor note: While any proposals might have their critics, looking at the bigger picture and considering all the suggestions the URC and Council have done well to incorporate so many ideas. No one should be critical of the people who have brought the proposals together for the common good. Remember you can't please all of the people all of the time
